Chapter 12

The first person to call was my brother.
"Pearl, are you seriously going to marry this guy?"
"We're in love, what's wrong with that?" I answered lazily while munching on peanuts.
On the other end of the phone, my brother's voice nearly cracked: "Mom and Dad are still vacationing abroad. If they find out about this, they'll absolutely murder me..."
"Just tell them your sister found someone as awesome as you. Isn't that enough?"
My brother fell silent for a moment, then hung up without another word.
But the next day, entertainment news broadcast a video of him proposing to Lily Smith.
Well, well, he accused me of making life decisions behind his back, but wasn't he doing exactly the same thing?
I turned my head to look at Ethan Shaw who was also watching the news beside me.
He must be feeling terrible right now.
"Should we... change the channel? Or maybe grab a drink?"
He didn't respond, just got up to fetch his laptop, then sat back down beside me.
He opened a picture of a wedding dress and softly asked me: "Do you like this one?"
"Are you planning something this elaborate?" I clutched the pillow in my arms tightly, anxiety bubbling inside me.
In the past, I would have jumped for joy.
But now, I felt like we were putting on a pointless show.
Not only would we fail to get what we wanted, but we might end up seriously hurt.
Ethan Shaw shook his head.
He gently touched the ring I had given him, his tone calm yet serious:
"Getting married alongside your brother isn't out of the question."
