Chapter 2

I looked at him, my lip curling with revulsion.

"Disgusting. Get away from me!"

His sobs caught in his throat, his body going rigid.

Before he could respond, I fixed my gaze on the sterile white ceiling and continued flatly.

"Then just kill me already! I'm worthless to you now, aren't I?"

Without my magic, I can never find my way home again. Never.

This world sickens me more than you can imagine. Better a quick end than this slow torture.

With that thought, I closed my eyes with eerie serenity, waiting for death's embrace.

But he just stood there, frozen. Then suddenly he lunged forward, pulling me into his arms with desperate, shaking hands.

"Melody, you're—you're joking, right? Everything's over now. We can finally be together."

I wrenched myself from his grasp, a bitter laugh escaping my lips as I spat out each word.

"Do I look like I'm fucking joking?"

I paused, then twisted the knife deeper.

"Don't worry, this time I won't come back.

The magic's gone. I'm just a pathetic human now. Like you."

His face fell as my words sank in.

Without flinching, I took the bloody scalpel, aimed it at my heart, and held it out to him.

"Finish what you started!"
