Chapter 1

I don't know why, but I can't feel the magic anymore. Not even a whisper of its power.

I've become utterly human now. Mortal. And my time is running out.

As this thought crossed my mind, Wilson burst through the door, his face alight with excitement.

"Melody! We can finally get married. What kind of wedding do you want this time?

Something by the ocean? Or perhaps..."

I lay on the blood-stained metal table, staring at him with dead eyes as I dragged the scalpel across my wrist. Dark, almost black blood poured from the wound, pooling beneath me.

That shut him up. My voice came out as a rasp.

"Is this enough? Enough of my blood for your precious research?"

The silence was deafening.

When our eyes met, I saw shock in his bloodshot gaze, and something else—was that actually pain I saw there?

I felt nothing. Turning away, I slashed open my other wrist and repeated myself, voice mechanical and hollow.

"Is. It. Enough?"

"Stop! Enough!"

He spun around wildly, knocking equipment in all directions. When he turned back, he clutched gauze in trembling hands, dropping to his knees to bandage my wounds with desperate care.

"I'm sorry, God, I'm so sorry. It's over now. All of it. I swear."

He broke down sobbing, his tears falling onto my clothes like rain.
