Wilson knocked the scalpel away with a trembling hand, babbling about how much he loved me, how he could never hurt me.
I let out a cold laugh, trailing my fingers across his cheek in a lover's caress, my voice like ice.
"But you're already so good at hurting me, aren't you?"
The color drained from his face. For several heartbeats, he couldn't form a single word in his defense.
A shout from outside broke the silence.
"Sir! Miss Luna is having another episode! Please hurry!"
Wilson's face transformed instantly. He bolted for the door without a backward glance.
Just before he vanished from sight, he seemed to remember my existence and rushed back.
"Melody, I'll—I'll be right back."
But after those words, he didn't return for an entire day.
Six days left.
I struggled for breath, staring at the lab door, my body wracked with spasms of pain so intense I couldn't scream.
The door flew open as a woman rushed in.
"Sister, did you save me?"
A woman my age in a white dress crouched beside me, her eyes unnaturally innocent and clear.
I forced my eyes open to look at her, only to have a mouthful of blood surge up my throat.
"Sister! Sister! Help—Brother, help!"
She sobbed, half-dragging my body as she stumbled toward the door.
