Chapter 5

When I reopened my eyes, I saw Ethan sitting in a chair beside my hospital bed.

The slight sound I made startled him awake. He rushed over and grabbed my hand, his voice hoarse.

"You've been unconscious for three days since coming out of the ICU. Thank God you're awake."

I silently studied his face. This was probably the first time in our three years of marriage that he'd kept vigil by my bedside.

Meeting my gaze, Ethan struggled to find words.

"Jade didn't mean it. Her emotions are unstable because of the pregnancy. She's been crying all day, saying she's sorry."

After hearing this, I curled my lips slightly. "Are you here to plead for your precious Jade?"

Ethan took a deep breath. "I know you're angry. But Jade is pregnant. If the police get involved, she could face criminal charges. That wouldn't be fair to her or the baby."

My voice dripped with sarcasm. "Ethan, don't you find it ironic that you're talking about fairness right now?"

Ethan ran his fingers through his hair in frustration. "So what do you want? Call the cops? Send her to prison?"

I looked at him and smiled slightly. "I won't call the police."

Ethan visibly relaxed.

"But," I slowly sat up, "I want you to sign this."

After flipping through the document, Ethan's eyes widened in surprise.

"A share transfer agreement? You want me to transfer 5% of my Grant Corporation shares to you?"

"Yes," I said calmly.

"Consider it the price for me not pressing attempted murder charges against your girlfriend. Quite fair, wouldn't you say?"

Ethan slammed the document down on the table.

"Iris! You're exploiting the situation!"

"Call it what you want," I shrugged indifferently.

"Or you can let Jade go to prison. Attempted murder should easily get her five to ten years."

Ethan stared at me intensely, his eyes burning with fury.

"After three years of marriage, I never knew you could be so damn cold."

"Right back at you," I retorted. "Letting your mistress try to kill your wife—how noble of you."

In the end, Ethan snatched up the pen and scrawled his signature across the agreement.

"Satisfied now?" Ethan asked coldly, tossing the document onto my lap.

As Ethan turned to leave, I called after him. "By the way, I have a little gift for you."
