Chapter 16

After what seemed like eternity, he began hammering on the door again, his voice cracking with desperation.

"Melody, are you sleeping? Is that why you can't hear me?

It's our wedding day! Please don't sleep through it. Please, wake up and open the door."

Still only silence.

Wilson's eyes grew red-rimmed, his hands shaking as he pounded the door with increasing violence.

This time he said nothing at all.

In the empty hallway, only the desperate thuds of his fists echoed.

James rushed up, staring at Wilson with bewilderment.

"Sir, what's going on? Those people downstairs—"

Wilson cut him off with a savage gesture.

"The key! Get me the damn key! NOW!"

He bellowed the words, then stepped back, clenching his fists and muttering to himself.

"No, no. She's just playing a prank with those people, right? She loves her little jokes. Die? She can't die."

Watching his panic, I felt nothing but contempt for his self-delusion. He couldn't even face what he'd done? He'd been so efficient at killing me before.

James returned, breathing hard.

"Sir! I found the key!"
