Chapter 10

It was not a carefully thought-out decision, just something I did on a whim.
He responded automatically, "Alright, I’ll try again tomorrow.
"Wait, what did you just say?"
That single “yes” echoed in his mind over and over.
He stood there, frozen like a computer that had crashed.
Then, suddenly, he ran over, lifted me up, and spun me around several times.
"This is amazing! You finally said yes!"
After putting me down, he scooped up our cat, Stella, and gave her a few excited kisses.
"Stella, I really am your dad now!"
Stella, annoyed by all the kisses, swatted him a couple of times.
He just touched the spots she hit and smiled like a lovestruck fool.
I could not help but wonder. What if our future child ended up being as silly as he was?
Wait, why was I thinking that far ahead?
Stella, acting all proud, jumped into my lap and started rolling around, showing off and being cute.
Then, like a shy newlywed, Chris sat down next to me, fidgeting nervously.
"Lexie, can I, um, enjoy some of the perks of being your boyfriend now?"
I did not look up or say anything.
Suddenly, he grabbed my chin, lifted my face, and kissed me firmly on the lips.
Our breaths mingled, our lips intertwined.
After the kiss, his face turned red, and he bolted out of the room.
No way, was he really that pure?
Two months later, Chris proposed to me.
As soon as he slipped the ring on my finger, he let out a sigh of relief and said, "I can finally relax. I was worried every day that you’d change your mind."
Honestly, ever since that day when I started imagining our future together, I knew I would never regret it.
……
One day, I suddenly felt a wave of nausea and rushed to the bathroom, but nothing came out.
Chris handed me a glass of water, his voice full of concern.
"Lexie, are you okay? If you’re not feeling well, we should go to the hospital."
I wanted to shake my head, but when I met his eyes, I nodded instead.
Fine, a visit to the doctor for some peace of mind would not hurt.
He took care of everything, from registering and collecting the forms to all the errands.
Finally, the doctor suggested we go to the obstetrics and gynecology department for a detailed check-up.
We stood outside the OB-GYN department, staring at each other in silence.
Chris’s palms were sweaty as he nervously asked, "Lexie, do you think you’re really pregnant? What do I need to do? Should I start preparing right now?"
Speechless, I dragged him into the office.
The doctor looked at the test results and confirmed it with a smile.
"Congratulations! You’re going to have a baby!"
In that moment, my mind went completely blank.
I never thought I could have a child of my own.
Chris was much calmer than I was. He carefully noted down the dates for prenatal check-ups and all the important precautions for the pregnancy.
It was not until we got home that it all started to feel real.
I placed my hand on my stomach. Inside was a child that belonged to both me and Chris.
He hugged me from behind, burying his face in my neck, his voice muffled.
"Lexie, I always hoped we’d have a child, but I never thought it would actually happen. This is amazing. Truly amazing."
Feeling the wetness on my neck, I realized that Chris was crying.
So, it turned out, tears of happiness really existed.
