Chapter 11

Abu and Old K walked out, acting completely wasted, and conveniently "forgot" to close the door tight.
Marco scrambled up, his eyes gleaming with a sickly light, and grabbed Sophia. "Did you hear that? We're going to turn this around. Elena is at that slaughterhouse tonight. If we grab her, we'll have the money to run!"
Sophia didn't care about the pain in her face or her injured leg anymore; her eyes lit up. "What are we waiting for? Let's go!"

Meanwhile, inside Leonardo's private villa, the fire in the fireplace was burning bright.
Leonardo elegantly swirled a glass of aged whiskey.
"Men like him always think they can outsmart everyone." Leonardo watched Marco's desperate, manic face on the surveillance screen, then turned to look at me, his voice deep and magnetic. "Elena, Marco prides himself on his tactics. So, at that slaughterhouse, I will make him watch his own strategy turn into his suicide note."
I stared at the red liquid in the glass, feeling nothing but indifference. "Do whatever you please."
Leonardo lowered his head and kissed my fingertips, his movements gentlemanly yet lingering. "Leave him to me. I'm going to make him understand that in this world, there are some women he isn't even worthy of looking up to."
The night grew darker. Marco, dragging Sophia along, was diving headfirst into the execution ground we had custom-tailored for him.

Marco and Sophia moved quickly. Sophia dragged her injured leg, but the adrenaline of kidnapping me made her forget the pain. They infiltrated the abandoned slaughterhouse in the West Suburbs.
"There's Elena!" Sophia whispered, pointing at the lit office on the second floor.
Through the window, Marco saw me sitting at the desk with my back to the door. Piled on the table were several heavy black bags.
Marco gripped his revolver tight. A man like him always thought he could outsmart everyone; he assumed that since I had just risen to power, I must be desperate to stash away private funds.

"I knew it," Marco sneered. "That woman is greedy to the bone."
"She's skimming gold behind Vito's back? Well, I'm going to make sure she leaves her life here, too."
He signaled to the limping Sophia. They split up to flank me, climbing the iron stairs toward the second floor.
