"Hey, I'm at the Mercedes dealership. We picked a car. You're good for it, right? Transfer the money now."
His voice was impatient over the phone.
"Stop rushing me! I said I'd do it—what's the hurry?"
"Show me the contract first. I'll transfer after I see it." I poured myself a glass of water.
Chris sounded suspicious. "Why do you need to see the contract?"
I coldly replied, "How do I know you're not scamming me? You think your money's special? I want to see the invoice too after you buy it!"
"Whatever... I'll send you a photo later." Chris hung up.
Hearing the dial tone, I smiled slightly.
Then I made another call, "Hello, Mr. Lewis? Are the evidence ready for his affair? I want him to leave with nothing!"
The voice on the other end replied, "All set, Ms. Shirley."
"Good, file the case with the court." I ended the call.
Soon, Chris sent the car contract via WeChat. I played dumb.
"Chris, I just found out large transfers take a day to process. Why don't you front the cost for now? The money's yours anyway—I'm not going anywhere."
Chris was furious. "You better not be lying!"
About ten minutes later, he sent the invoice.
I laughed heartily. Chris, enjoy your little dream while it lasts.
I blocked Chris and Lily on everything and handed the rest over to my lawyer.
After the court ruling, I thought peace would finally come, but Chris had the nerve to show up at the fire station.
The thought of him trying to get money from me only to find he couldn't contact me was utterly satisfying!
Chris stormed into my office, eyes bloodshot, glaring at me. "Shirley, you bitch! You were pretending this whole time!"
"Faking a split, pretending to help with the car—what an act!"
"You set me up with huge debts—I never knew you were so vicious! We have nothing now—happy?"
I just coldly smiled. "You started this. You wanted me dead—I just fought back."
"Chris, you have no one to blame but yourself and Lily."
"And you think Lily's still with you?"
His eyes widened in rage. "What are you saying?"
"She found herself a sugar daddy and started working at another fire station. Even if she quits, someone will keep her."
As Chris seethed, I added leisurely, "Only you are left with nothing but over a million in debt."
I gave him a dismissive glance and turned to leave.
Suddenly, Chris pulled a military knife from his clothes and charged at me!
I sensed danger and bolted, shouting for help as I reached the yard.
Alex, who'd been waiting, rushed over with two firefighters and pinned Chris down.
Ten minutes later, Chris was taken away in handcuffs, sirens blaring.
Once the dust settled, Alex happily walked over. "Now that there's an opening by your side, can I take it?"
I smirked mysteriously. "Depends on my mood!" I turned and walked away.
Alex caught up. "That night at your door, you turned me down to avoid giving Chris leverage, right?"
Seeing my silent smile, he swept me into his arms. "Whatever—after all these years, I finally made it! Woohoo!"
I pinched his ear. "Are you a turtle? How'd you hold out so long?"
His yelps and my laughter echoed across the yard.
Soon after, we both resigned and planned a world trip.

With careful spending, it was enough for us to travel the world. In the Arctic, Alex proposed.
Under the shimmering northern lights, he renewed his promise from college,
"Shirley, I'll be with you till our hair turns white. Marry me!"
