But one person wouldn't let me delete him.
Mason.
I sighed,looking at yet another message from him.Not another"good morning,"is it?
Since learning I'd moved out of Ethan's place,Mason had been texting me constantly—"good morning"s and"good night"s everyday on time.
I'd done the same once.
When I was pursuing Ethan,I sent him messages relentlessly, even when he didn't reply.
So I knew what Mason felt for me.
But having just left a relationship,I couldn't just jump into another one ignoring my scars.
I had hinted to Mason multiple times,subtly and not,that I wasn't ready.
But he was undeterred, saying he'd wait.
I sighed. He was just like me back then.
A hopeless romantic, chasing love until it left you with nothing.
But this time,Mason's message was different:"Just escaped a mess.Wanna unwind?"
He sent me an address, it waas a new rooftop infinity pool nearby.
It was supposedly a popular site.
I considered it.Since Lily's return,I hadn't gone out to have fun.
So I replied with a simple"Okay."
When Mason saw that single word and was so excited he couldn't sleep all night.
The next day,he picked me up with his car and we went to the pool together.
The rooftop infinity pool was packed, buzzing with people.
In the crowd,I ran into Lily,of all people.
She strutted over, leaning close to whisper in my ear,"You loser."
"Ethan's mine."
I looked at her,puzzled.
"Honestly,I'm curious. Why are you so brazen and proud of ruining other’s relationshio? When Ethan and I were together, you were constantly calling someone else's boyfriend. Were you just lonely,or what?Lucky for you,it was me.If it was someone else's boyfriend, their girlfriend would be coming after you now."
I shrugged."Actually, you don't need to do this.I'm not fighting you for Ethan anymore. You don't have to hate me so much."
Her face twisted with anger.
But then she saw something, and a sinister smile spread across her lips.
She shoved me into the pool, then dived in herself.
The water was deep.
I could swim, but Lily kicked me hard in the leg, numbing it.
I tried to move,but my leg was useless,and I couldn't paddle.
Slowly,I sank.
Then I realized what Lily had seen.
Ethan.
...
The pool water was freezing.
I looked up at the rippling surface, and memories of my life started flashing before my eyes.
Water filled my nose,my ears,everywhere.
I was about to die.
As I closed my eyes,a familiar face appeared, his expression frantic.
He was coming for me.
Mason. He grabbed me and swam desperately upward.
When we reached the edge,I felt like I'd cheated death.
Ethan and the others rushed over.
Ethan held me,his hands shaking."Sophie,you're okay,thank God you're okay."
He thanked Mason."Mason,thank you.If it wasn't for you,my girlfriend..."
I was still dazed, after all I nearly died back there.
The noise around me snapped me back.
I saw Mason,who had saved me,crouched on the ground,trembling.
