Chapter 19

Wilson sobbed openly, tears streaming down his face as he shook his head violently, still denying the truth.

"She's not dead! She can't be! Don't you know she's—"

He stopped mid-sentence, a terrible realization dawning on his face.

After a long moment, he began muttering to himself.

"You're lying to me, right? All those other times...it wasn't like this."

The family doctor, arriving too late, delivered the final push into the abyss.

"Sir, I'm afraid there's no doubt. She shows no vital signs. Based on the rigor mortis, death occurred approximately an hour ago.

You studied medicine—you should have recognized the signs immediately. Furthermore—"

Before he could finish, Wilson lunged at him, grabbing him by the collar.

"NO! She's alive! SHE'S ALIVE!

James, get the priest ready. Her dress is just dirty. We'll get her a new one..."

He gave orders with eerie calm despite his wild eyes. After pushing the doctor away, he tenderly wiped blood from "my" face, whispering, "It's okay, it's okay" like a mantra.

"How far will you take this delusion?!"

His father slapped him again, harder this time.
