Chapter 10

The moment I finished speaking, Wilson dropped to his knees amid the shattered glass.

"Wilson!"

His parents cried out in horror. I stepped back with a cold laugh, shaking my head.

At my rejection, he grabbed the scalpel and began stabbing himself over and over. Blood pouring from his wounds, he crawled toward me on his knees.

"Please, Melody. Please marry me."

I laughed cruelly and stomped on his outstretched hand.

"No. Now get out. I need to rest."

Wilson's expression cycled through shock, pain, and resignation before he finally led everyone out.

The moment the door closed, I collapsed. Black blood erupted from my mouth as I curled into a ball, my body wracked with unbearable pain.

The next day—the second-to-last day—I woke to shouting.

When I stepped out of my room, a crowd below pointed up at me.

"That's her! Acting so high and mighty! She should be grateful someone like Spencer would even look at her!"

"What does she think this is, some fairy tale where the prince begs for love? Wake up, princess!"

Wilson suddenly appeared, looking up at me with desperate hope.

I met his eyes and smiled.

"Fine. I'll marry you. But I plan the wedding. All of it."

I slammed the door before he could respond, not caring how he might react to my sudden acceptance.

On my final day, I donned the same wedding dress as before. Blood flowed freely from my eyes, ears, nose and mouth.

As I collapsed in a pool of my own blood, I heard the solemn notes of a requiem playing outside.

Someone knocked on my locked door with steady, measured taps.

"Melody, come on, this isn't funny. Why are there funeral directors here on our wedding day? It's bad luck."
