Chapter 6

The silence stretched between us.

"Why? WHY?!"

Wilson's tears fell as he gripped my shoulders, his voice a desperate hiss.

I met his gaze with ice in my eyes, saying nothing.

He was the one who broke, muttering like a madman.

"I get it, I get it. You still blame me. But I was going crazy too!

I don't know why the outbreak happened so suddenly. People were dying by the hundreds.

Professor Davis volunteered himself as the first test subject. He made me do it—made me inject him myself.

But it failed. And his daughter—his only child—lost her mind from the shock. Then she got infected too.

I had no options left. She was in agony, coughing up blood day and night. Nothing could ease her pain. Nothing."

I let out a hollow laugh as tears streaked down my face.

"So you sacrificed ME!"

Wilson froze, then his face contorted into something between laughter and tears as he screamed back.

"She's my mentor's only daughter!

I couldn't let her die too! And you—you can't die! You're different—special—like some goddess sent to save us all. It's destiny..."

I slapped him before he could finish, the crack echoing through the room.

"Yes, I don't die. But I FEEL EVERYTHING. Every. Single. Cut."

The last words came out as a hoarse whisper, every ounce of my strength poured into them.
