Chapter 4

That night, I waited on our bed as Karl entered our chambers.

"Karl, please..."

"Don't do this..."

I wrapped my arms around his waist. For a moment, something like regret flickered in his eyes.

Hope flared in my chest—then died as he closed his eyes and pushed me away.

"I'm sorry, Ella."

He stepped back, putting distance between us.

"This isn't what I want. But the pack needs the North's alliance. I can't sacrifice everyone's future for... personal considerations."

My hands remained outstretched, grasping at empty air.

He walked to the door, pausing only to say, "Three days from now."

Before the third day arrived, the Council of Elders summoned me.

I entered their chamber to find them already assembled, faces grim.

The Grand Elder cleared his throat awkwardly.

"Ella, you've been an exemplary Luna. Your dedication is unquestioned."

I said nothing, waiting for the inevitable.

"But for the pack's future..."

"I understand," I cut him off. "You want me to go quietly to my banishment."

The elders exchanged uncomfortable glances.

"Ella, we appreciate your understanding." The Grand Elder sighed heavily. "This is for the greater good."

I let my gaze travel around the chamber.

Three of these elders owed me their lives.

Terminal illnesses that I had cured through my prayers to the Moon Goddess, sacrificing pieces of my own life force.

Now they would cast me aside.

"I saved your lives," I said quietly.

The Grand Elder flinched.

"You." I pointed at the Grand Elder. "I cured your failing heart."

"You." My finger moved to the next elder. "I healed your son when he couldn't walk."

"And you. Your wife bears children because of me."

With each accusation, another elder lowered his eyes in shame.

"And now, for political advantage, you discard me?"

The Grand Elder's face flushed with embarrassment.

"Ella, we're only thinking of the pack..."

"Enough." I raised my hand. "Save your excuses. I'll cooperate."

I turned toward the door.

At the threshold, I paused and looked back.

"I only hope you don't come to regret this decision."
