Chapter 5

Though the wounds were superficial, I insisted on taking Sebastian to the hidden clinic.

It was a place specifically for treating supernatural beings, hidden in an East London alley.

The doctor—a wizard with half-moon spectacles and ancient eyes—examined Sebastian carefully.

He examined Sebastian's wounds.

"Just surface wounds. They'll heal in two days. Damn, I envy you vampires and your regenerative abilities."

He applied a salve as he spoke.

I sat on the clinic's bench, watching Sebastian.

He pressed his thin lips together, eyes half-closed.

His pale skin looked almost translucent under the clinic's sickly yellow lights.

His long lashes cast feathery shadows across his cheekbones.

My throat tightened. "Sebastian."

He opened his eyes and turned toward me.

The clinic was eerily quiet at this hour.

The night's chill seeped through the window frames.

As our eyes met, he reached for my hand first.

Those cool fingers wrapped around mine.

I sniffled, moving to sit beside him. "If I'd known that jerk would show up, I'd have gotten you out of there. He's been in Scotland for years—no wonder you two never crossed paths."

He hesitated, then admitted quietly, "Actually, we have met."

I stiffened. "When?"

"That rainy day. When I went back to the flat for my hard drive."

"He didn't hurt you, did he?"

He studied my face for a long moment.

Those dark eyes held something I couldn't quite decipher.

His Adam's apple bobbed once.

Finally, he offered a simple, "No."

"I don't buy it. Something happened! Tell me!" I pressed.

He glanced at me, then deflected with a quiet, "I don't remember."
